One Premier League chief executive is reported to have said: “If we were to pick up the Premier League and move it to another part of world right now we’d get absolutely slaughtered.

While another reportedly offered: “It’s just a waste of energy. Let’s just say we all want to start the league and life. Unfortunately only God and the pandemic can make this decision. And it does not look likely.”

The Premier League stands to lose around £762m in broadcasting revenue if they fail to conclude the campaign. Another club chief is adamant playing matches behind closed doors is the only solution.

He said: “The only other option is playing behind closed doors when safe to do so and then have an acceleration of matches on Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday over a tight period.
