Reports indicate that Paris Saint-Germain defender Nuno Mendes is interested in a move to United this transfer window.
Ruben Amorim is looking to strengthen the left side of his squad, and United’s recruitment team has identified several targets.
It was revealed at the beginning of January that Manchester United is keen on Mendes after he declined a contract extension with PSG. Mendes has made his intentions clear to PSG.
Nuno Mendes has reportedly informed Paris Saint-Germain that he wants the opportunity to play for Ruben Amorim at Manchester United.
The Portuguese wing-back has pulled out of contract negotiations with PSG, who are eager to secure him on a new long-term deal.
PSG’s director, Luis Campos, wants Mendes to commit to the club, but Mendes is considering his options, one of which is Manchester United.
The Red Devils have expressed their interest to PSG, and the two clubs have a positive relationship, stemming from their summer deal for Manuel Ugarte.
While PSG is reluctant to sell, they recognize that they may need to cash in on Mendes if he doesn’t sign a new contract, as he has 18 months remaining on his current deal.
However, Manchester United may struggle to finance a permanent deal for Mendes, who is valued at around £50 million.
Amorim is well-acquainted with Mendes, having managed him at Sporting, where Mendes made 47 appearances and won three trophies, including the Portuguese league title.
Amorim and Manchester United’s football chiefs acknowledge that they lack a player for the left side of Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.
Mendes is a primary target, but not the only one identified by United’s recruitment team in recent weeks. They are also interested in Sporting CP’s Maxi Araujo and Lecce’s Danish starlet Patrick Dorgu. United’s scouting team believes both players would fit well under Amorim at Old Trafford.
Manchester United’s Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in Dorgu following Destiny Udogie’s injury.
