Erik ten Hag gives green light for Cristiano Ronaldo to leave this summer ahead of arrival

Erik ten Hag has told Manchester United that Cristiano Ronaldo will not be part of his plans at Old Trafford next campaign.

Ten Hag has agreed a deal in principle to become United’s new permanent manager this summer with huge changes expected at the club.

As many as 10 players could leave with the Ajax manager requesting control over United’s transfers and the selection of his backroom staff during negotiations with the Premier League club.

Paul Pogba, Cavani and Jesse Lingard are among the high-profile names expected to leave but The Star now claim ten Hag has given the greenlight for Ronaldo to leave.

The Portuguese forward sealed an emotional return to Manchester last summer, signing a two-year contract with the option of a third.

The 37-year-old has produced some more memorable moments during his second stint at Old Trafford.

But with United heading towards a fifth successive season without a trophy and with Champions League qualification in major doubt, he is said to be considering his future.

A decision over his future may have been made however with ten Hag telling United chiefs that Ronaldo’s age and ‘luxury status’ means he will not be part of his plans, with the Dutchman keen to implement a new style of play this summer.

Ronaldo is United’s top scorer this campaign with 18 goals but questions over his work rate and ability to press the opposition has raised questions over being suitable to work under ten Hag.

United have not consulted Ronaldo over the appointment of Ten Hag after the Portuguese discouraged the club from making a move for Antonio Conte earlier in the season.
