Ten Hag takes brutal swipe at Southgate’s tactics after Serbia win

Manchester United’s coach, Erik ten Hag, has cast doubts on Gareth Southgate’s strategic choices during England’s initial Euro 2024 match against Serbia.

England narrowly secured a victory in their tournament debut, with Jude Bellingham scoring an early goal to defeat Serbia on Sunday.

Despite having a team that looked stronger on paper, England’s display, particularly in the latter half, left much to be desired.

On the Dutch channel NOS, where Ten Hag served as a commentator, he expressed disapproval of England’s tactics and subtly criticized Southgate’s “vision”.

Previously, there were rumors linking the English manager to Manchester United before the club confirmed Ten Hag would continue in his role.

Speaking on NOS, Ten Hag said: “It’s the vision of the manager [Southgate]. England will take a 1-0 lead, then he [Southgate] decides to start gambling with making his team compact and relying on moments for the remaining minutes of the game.”

It could be argued that Ten Hag was merely elucidating on his team’s strategy, which often hinges on pivotal moments to clinch victories. Following a comprehensive review by Manchester United this summer, Ten Hag’s position has been reinforced.

Contrary to expectations that the FA Cup final last month might mark Ten Hag’s departure, he is set to continue his tenure and is anticipated to engage in discussions regarding a contract renewal.

Ten Hag acknowledged that Manchester United engaged in deliberations with ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, who recently parted ways with Bayern Munich, about the possibility of him taking over.

However, Ten Hag affirms that the club ultimately made the correct choice.

“Here in Holland this [talking to another manager] is not done, in fact, it’s not even allowed here,” he said. “But in England, they have different rules and laws. INEOS took their time. They are new in football, it’s normal to reflect on the season. It’s no secret that they talked with multiple candidates.

“Manchester United have told me that they spoke with Tuchel, but they eventually came to the conclusion that they already have the best manager.”
