Sporting CP is currently performing excellently, topping the league with nine consecutive wins. However, the allure of managing Manchester United might be too tempting for Amorim to ignore.
According to The Athletic, Amorim has an £8.3 million release clause in his contract, and United’s CEO Omar Berrada is reportedly a strong supporter of the former Benfica player.
Reports from TeamTalk suggest Amorim has already discussed potential transfer moves with the board, indicating that four players may not be part of his future plans.
Among these are Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof, Antony, and Casemiro, who could be moved down the pecking order at Old Trafford.
The United board is said to agree that these players’ performances do not justify their substantial salaries. Together, Eriksen, Lindelof, Antony, and Casemiro cost the club £166 million in transfer fees (excluding add-ons).
Should these players depart, United would need replacements, particularly in midfield, where Eriksen and Casemiro’s absence would leave a gap.
Amorim is reportedly interested in several Sporting players, such as the 23-year-old center-back Gonçalo Inácio, who has earned 12 caps for Portugal and was part of a solid defense last season, conceding only 29 goals in 34 games.
This season, Sporting has continued its strong defensive form, allowing just two goals in nine matches. Inácio has a reported release clause of £51 million, with Liverpool also rumored to be interested.
Additionally, English winger Marcus Edwards, 25, is being considered as a possible replacement for Antony.
Edwards, who began his career at Tottenham, moved to Vitória de Guimarães in 2019 before joining Sporting, where he has contributed 48 goals in 116 games since 2022, playing a key role in the team’s 2023-24 title win.
