Ancelotti typically tailors his strategies to highlight players’ individual strengths, as he did with Jude Bellingham last season, creating environments where they can excel.
However, the arrival of Mbappe has complicated this approach, leaving some players affected by the shift.
Those feeling the impact most notably include Eduardo Camavinga and Mbappe himself, along with Rodrygo and Bellingham, who are also adjusting to the new dynamics.
Bellingham, specifically, is encountering obstacles in this updated setup. Under Ancelotti, his preferred areas on the field are now restricted due to Mbappe’s positioning up front, limiting the space where Bellingham typically thrives.
Last season, he made penetrating runs from midfield that were pivotal to Real’s attack, but now, with Mbappe commanding central areas, Bellingham’s opportunities to contribute have diminished, leading to fewer chances for him to score.
Mbappe’s challenges are even more pronounced. He’s currently positioned as a center-forward, a role that doesn’t suit his strengths.
As a natural left winger, Mbappe excels by using his speed and agility to cut inside and shoot with his right foot. His current role, however, often requires him to play with his back to the goal, restricting his influence on the game.
This tactical dilemma raises questions about Ancelotti’s approach, especially as he previously tried moving Vinicius Jr. to a central role to allow Rodrygo space on the left.
That strategy has faded since Mbappe’s inclusion in the squad.
Rodrygo, too, has been affected by this shift. He has seen his involvement reduced in Ancelotti’s plans, despite having formed a strong partnership with Vinicius last season.
Their synergy allowed them to effectively challenge defenses, but with Mbappe’s arrival, Rodrygo’s role has been diminished.
This is concerning, as Rodrygo’s talent for creating space and opportunities for others is being underutilized in the current system.
Camavinga, another player affected, has also struggled to find his ideal role. Ancelotti often selects Aurelien Tchouameni as the primary midfielder, limiting Camavinga’s chances to demonstrate his abilities.
Additionally, Federico Valverde’s versatility in a right midfield role has further complicated things.
Valverde’s defensive contributions in that position restrict Camavinga’s opportunities to play in his natural central role, where he excels at controlling the midfield and contributing on both ends.
Overall, Mbappe’s arrival has led to a challenging phase for Ancelotti. The current formation has left key players—Mbappe, Bellingham, Rodrygo, and Camavinga—less effective in roles that don’t align with their strengths.
