However, with Amorim now taking charge at Manchester United, speculation has grown that the Swedish forward might follow his former coach to Old Trafford in the near future.
The 25-year-old has been in sensational form this season, netting an impressive 23 goals in 18 appearances across all competitions.
Such performances make him a prime candidate to bolster United’s attacking options under Amorim’s leadership.
Despite the growing speculation, Gyökeres has downplayed the idea of an imminent move, though he has expressed his admiration for Amorim and acknowledged the excellent connection they shared during their time together in Portugal.
“Joining Amorim at Man United? Probably he already has strikers there,” Gyokeres said, as quoted below by journalist Fabrizio Romano.
“It’s sad to see him leaving Sporting, but we understand his decision, of course. He’s been key for me, Amorim gave me a chance helping me to develop.”
It seems unlikely that Gyökeres will remain at Sporting for much longer, as the 26-year-old’s talent makes him a prime target for top clubs across Europe.
Manchester United could hold a significant advantage in the race for his signature, thanks to Ruben Amorim’s familiarity with the striker and his ability to maximize Gyökeres’ potential within his system.
United supporters are eager for the addition of a reliable forward, especially with Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee failing to impress and Marcus Rashford struggling to rediscover his best form.
