Recent performances have seen Chelsea drop points against Crystal Palace, Ipswich Town, Fulham, and Everton, causing their title hopes to wane.
Additionally, their defensive line is weakened with Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana sidelined due to injuries.
With the January transfer window now open, reports suggest Chelsea might sell up to six first-team players to finance the acquisition of a new centre-back.
According to The Telegraph, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Carney Chukwuemeka, Axel Disasi, Cesare Casadei, Ben Chilwell, and Christopher Nkunku are all considered expendable.
It has been suggested that Chelsea are interested in Crystal Palace captain Guehi, among other centre-back options.
The report stated: “Guehi is one of a number of defenders Chelsea are considering and it is believed the club have made checks on Crystal Palace’s valuation of the player.”
Nevertheless, bringing back their former player, who was with the club from 2007 to 2021, could prove challenging and costly, but the idea has ‘not yet been ruled out’.
Last week, Blues manager Maresca mentioned that Fofana might be sidelined for the rest of the season.
He said: “Unfortunately he could be out for the season. We don’t know exactly but he could be out for part of the season. Every time you ask me about Wes, I said many times I am in love with Wes.
“It was the first update and the first information we had but having a test, we realised it was worst than what we thought at the beginning. It is hamstring and unfortunately, we are going to lose him for a while.”
