However, the defender’s celebrations were muted as the offside flag was raised, causing little surprise among the spectators.
After a VAR review, it was determined that Adarabioyo was onside when the shot was taken, confirming the goal.
A statement from the Premier League Match Centre on X explained: “The referee’s call of no goal was checked by VAR, who determined that Tosin was in an onside position and recommended that the goal was awarded.”
The goal occurred when James fired a shot towards the net from the edge of the box after the ball had come to him 20 yards out following a corner.
His attempt was deflected by a Wolves defender and looped into the crowded penalty area, landing at Adarabioyo’s feet.
Adarabioyo controlled the ball with his chest before turning to slot it home. Initially, it appeared that he was in an offside position, but a VAR check revealed that Matheus Cunha had kept the Chelsea player onside.
This was Adarabioyo’s fourth goal of the season, making him one of Chelsea’s most in-form players in front of goal, having scored twice in the 5-0 FA Cup victory over Morecambe nine days earlier.
Chelsea seemed poised to head into half-time with the lead, but a mistake from Robert Sanchez in added time allowed Wolves to equalize.
Cunha’s corner was mishandled by the Spanish goalkeeper, and Matt Doherty quickly reacted to stab the ball home from close range.
In the second half, Chelsea dominated, with goals from Marc Cucurella and Noni Madueke securing a 3-1 win, ending their five-game winless streak in the league.
