While the Barca badge is widely adored, fans have often wondered why it features an English flag. The answer has now been revealed.
Since its founding on November 29, 1899, Barcelona’s official badge has undergone several modifications, though it has largely remained consistent since the 1910s.
In the top right corner, above the club colors of blue and garnet, are the red and yellow stripes of the Senyera, representing the coat of arms of the Crown of Aragon, a medieval kingdom in northeastern Spain.
Next to this is what appears to be the English flag, a red cross on a white background. However, the resemblance to the English flag is purely coincidental.
The design pays homage to Saint George, the patron saint of both England and Catalonia, where he is known as Sant Jordi.
In Catalonia, Saint George is revered as a military hero who, according to legend, slew a dragon that was terrorizing a village, saving the king’s daughter in the process.
The story of the patron saint is cherished throughout Spain, and Barcelona celebrates Saint George’s Day in April each year.
Throughout the club’s history, several English players have worn the Barcelona badge featuring Saint George’s cross.
Among them, the most notable is England icon Gary Lineker, who scored 51 goals and provided three assists in 138 appearances for the Spanish club.
