The 20-year-old full-back, making only his third appearance for the Red Devils since his £29 million move from Lecce in January, was eager to impress Ruben Amorim. ..Continue Reading
Unfortunately, Dorgu was involved in Jaden Philogene’s comical fourth-minute opener and was later sent off in a nightmare first half for the young Dane.
United had taken control of the game when Dorgu received his marching orders, with Matthijs de Ligt scoring after Ipswich captain Sam Morsy netted an own goal.
However, Dorgu’s inexperience was evident as he mistimed a challenge on Omari Hutchinson in the 43rd minute, leaving the Ipswich attacker writhing on the turf.
Referee Darren England had no choice but to issue a red card following a VAR review, leaving United with ten men for the remainder of the match.
Philogene soon scored his second of the night, but Harry Maguire restored United’s lead with a powerful header, which ultimately secured the win at the start of the second half.
The matches Dorgu will miss through suspension:
– Manchester United vs Fulham (FA Cup) – March 2
– Manchester United vs Arsenal (Premier League) – March 9
– Leicester vs Manchester United (Premier League) – March 16
Dorgu’s red card means he will miss United’s next three domestic matches, starting with the FA Cup fifth-round tie against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday.
Amorim will also be without Dorgu for the league games at home against Arsenal and away to Leicester.
However, Dorgu will be available for both legs of United’s Europa League round of 16 clash with Real Sociedad.
Amorim defended Dorgu in the post-match press conference, insisting that the left-back is “clearly ready” for the Premier League despite his moment of madness.
‘He’s ready because he already proved that in the last game,’ the United head coach told reporters.
‘Any player here can have a mistake like today from Patrick and the sending off, he wants to play the ball.
‘Maybe he’s a little bit harsh with the way he went for the ball. ‘He’s inexperienced but he’s clearly ready for the Premier League.
‘People judge right away so last week he was okay, good performance against Everton and today they will say that he’s not experienced enough to play in the Premier League. But I don’t feel that way.’
The former Lecce defender will be eligible to return to Premier League action when United visit the City Ground to face Nottingham Forest on April 1.
During Dorgu’s suspension, Amorim might consider moving Diogo Dalot to the left flank, providing a chance for Noussair Mazraoui to play at right-back.
