While a strong run in the Europa League might soften the blow of their domestic struggles, it won’t mask the clear reality that major rebuilding is needed to restore the club to its former stature.
Both current manager Ruben Amorim and his predecessor Erik ten Hag have been unable to get the best out of the team in the 2024-25 season, with a noticeable lack of attacking threat being a key issue.
The club is setting its sights high as they look to bring in a new striker during the summer transfer window.
Reports from Turkey and Italy’s Tuttosport indicate that United’s interest in Napoli forward Victor Osimhen—currently on loan at Galatasaray—is serious and moving forward.
“TuttoSport today state that Manchester United now have an ‘agreement in principle’ with Osimhen’s entourage over the striker’s salary, amidst keen interest from Juventus and their sporting director Cristiano Guintoli,” relays Sport Witness.
The Nigerian star has long been regarded as one of the most sought-after forwards in world football, and he’s lived up to the hype this season with 21 goals in 25 Super Lig games, helping push Galatasaray toward what looks like a league title.
Having already netted 65 goals in Serie A, it was only natural that top clubs like Juventus and Manchester United would take notice.
If the reported negotiations are indeed progressing, Manchester United’s next step will be to offload some current squad members in order to activate Osimhen’s hefty €75 million release clause and make space for him in the team.
Should they succeed, club legend Rio Ferdinand would be ecstatic.
Earlier this month, Ferdinand voiced his support for the Nigerian striker on his show Rio Presents.
“We need Osimhen,” he boomed, pointing ominously through the screens of his followers.
“We need experience. We need someone who can score. We need someone who can come and show these young strikers at Man Utd how to do it.”
In reality, those young strikers – Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee – might have to be sold to allow Osimhen’s signing.
Ferdinand isn’t deterred. “If I’m Man Utd, I’m making it happen,” he continued.
