Hernandez’s departure could indirectly benefit Liverpool by clearing the way for Atletico Madrid to finalize a deal for Andy Robertson.
The Scottish full-back, who has spent seven years at Anfield, is expected to join the Spanish side, who had also shown interest in Hernandez before shifting focus to Robertson.
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano reports that Hernandez is close to sealing his move to Al-Hilal, which could accelerate Atletico’s efforts to land Robertson and provide Liverpool with a welcome cash injection.
Atletico had also considered Lucas Digne from Aston Villa but were put off by the £10 million valuation for a player with just one year left on his contract.
Robertson, meanwhile, was poised to lose his starting role at Liverpool with the imminent £40 million arrival of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, which would have limited his playing time.
Following a heavy summer outlay, Liverpool are looking to balance the books by moving on several squad players.
The combined sales of Robertson and Jarell Quansah—who is reportedly heading to Bayer Leverkusen—could bring in around £40 million.
With only a year left on his contract and no extension in sight, Liverpool are prepared to accept £5 million for the 32-year-old rather than risk losing him for free next summer.
Quansah, along with Harvey Elliott and Darwin Núñez, has also been linked with a potential exit. Meanwhile, Ibrahima Konaté is said to be attracting interest from Real Madrid and has paused contract renewal talks.
Liverpool’s transfer activity is far from over. Kerkez is expected to become the third major signing of the window, following Wirtz and Frimpong.
The club is also prioritizing a new centre-back, with Marc Guehi reportedly high on their list.
A forward addition hasn’t been ruled out either, though links to Alexander Isak and Julián Álvarez suggest any deal could be complex ahead of the 2025–26 campaign.
