Despite his standout performances for Manchester United during the 2024/25 campaign, Fernandes was notably absent from the list.
In a season where United struggled overall, the Portuguese midfielder still delivered 19 goals and 19 assists across 57 appearances in all competitions.
Later that evening, Fernandes broke his silence by sharing a post on Instagram celebrating McTominay’s inclusion, writing: “Buzzing for you my friend.”
The 2025 Ballon d’Or winner will be announced on September 22 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.
Manchester City’s Rodri currently holds the title, having edged out Real Madrid stars Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham in last year’s vote.
