The 25-year-old defender experienced a whirlwind few days. On Sunday, he led Palace to a commanding 3-0 victory over Aston Villa, capping off the performance with a stunning long-range goal — a moment many believed would be his final contribution in a Palace shirt. ..Continue Reading
By the following day, Guehi seemed on the verge of a move to Anfield. Reports indicated that a £35 million fee had been agreed with Liverpool, and personal terms were settled ahead of a scheduled medical.
However, according to BBC Sport, Crystal Palace ultimately blocked the transfer.
Their decision came after they failed to secure a replacement for Guehi, with their top target, Igor Julio, opting to sign for West Ham United instead.
This came after Palace boss Oliver Glasner stressed that “we need to keep Marc to play a successful season” during a press conference on Sunday.
Glasner added: “I know if we don’t sell Marc, he will accept it. He loves the club and team, he feels the appreciation, and we feel the same from his side. That’s why I have to say we need to keep him.”
Unlike Yoane Wissa and Alexander Isak, Marc Guehi remained fully committed to Crystal Palace, continuing to train and play despite ongoing transfer rumors.
Interestingly, Palace reportedly went so far as to prepare a farewell video for Guehi, which later surfaced on social media—though its authenticity remains unconfirmed.
The alleged video began with footage from Palace’s FA Cup triumph over Manchester City in May, followed by a montage of Guehi’s standout moments at the club, including goals, defensive highlights, and interview clips.
Despite the speculation, Guehi—who is under contract with Palace until June 2026—is set to stay in south London at least until the January transfer window.
The England international is expected to return to Premier League action on September 13, when Oliver Glasner’s squad hosts Sunderland at Selhurst Park.
Before that, he may feature in England’s upcoming World Cup qualifying matches against Andorra and Serbia.
With Guehi’s move to Liverpool now off the table, manager Arne Slot faces a shortage of options at centre-back. Beyond regular starters Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté, the Reds are left with Joe Gomez and teenage prospect Giovanni Leoni.
Rhys Williams, who spent last season on loan at Morecambe, is currently sidelined with injury.
This situation raises the possibility of Liverpool exploring the free agent market. According to the Liverpool Echo, several defenders are available, though there’s no indication the club is actively pursuing any of them.
Among the unattached players are Kurt Zouma, formerly of Chelsea, Everton, and West Ham, who recently parted ways with Saudi outfit Al-Orobah. Also available is Takehiro Tomiyasu, who became a free agent after being released by Arsenal in June.
