Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim was reportedly displeased after learning that one of his senior players had requested a new contract ahead of the upcoming season.
Following a disappointing campaign last year, most of the United squad were subjected to a 25% pay reduction due to the club’s failure to secure Champions League qualification — a clause that has become routine at Old Trafford in recent seasons. ..Continue Reading
However, it hasn’t always gone down well with players. Back in 2022, Cristiano Ronaldo was said to be frustrated when his weekly wage dropped from £480,000 to £360,000 after United only made it into the Europa League.
This summer, it appears goalkeeper Andre Onana was similarly unhappy. According to a report from The Athletic, Onana returned for pre-season training seeking improved terms, having been affected by the same wage cut.
His request, however, reportedly didn’t sit well with Amorim, who was already under pressure to reshape the squad.
Onana joined United from Inter Milan in 2023 for a fee of £47.2 million and signed a five-year contract.
Despite high expectations, the Cameroon international has struggled to deliver consistent performances and recently lost his starting spot to Altay Bayindir.
Transfer speculation has surrounded Onana throughout the summer, but interest has been limited. Monaco were said to be the only club to show serious intent, but backed out after learning United would demand at least £30 million for the keeper.
There were also whispers of a potential move to West Ham, but Graham Potter’s side reportedly passed on the opportunity, believing Onana didn’t offer a significant upgrade over their current goalkeeping options.
The Hammers recently signed Mads Hermansen from Leicester for £18 million, though he’s had a shaky start to life in the Premier League.
Alphonse Areola, meanwhile, continues to feature primarily in cup matches.
