In his first 19 league outings, Marmoush has netted seven goals and provided three assists, earning widespread recognition for his dynamic style of play.
However, his debut season wasn’t without setbacks. Manchester City ended the campaign without silverware, bowing out early in both the Champions League and Club World Cup. Marmoush also missed a crucial penalty in the FA Cup final loss to Crystal Palace.
The new season hasn’t started smoothly either, with Guardiola’s side dropping points in two of their first three matches.
Over his initial months in English football, Marmoush has faced off against some of the league’s top defenders, including Virgil van Dijk, William Saliba, and Marc Guehi. Yet, it was a Chelsea star who left the biggest impression on him.
But when asked to name his toughest Premier League opponent, the 26-year-old said: ‘Until now, it was Reece James.
‘It was my first Premier League game. He’s fast, strong and has quality on the ball. He gave me a tough time.
‘I haven’t played much in the Premier League yet, but I’ll say James for now.’
Marmoush’s first appearance for Manchester City came in a January clash with Chelsea, where he was deployed on the left flank, directly facing off against Chelsea skipper Reece James.
Although James largely succeeded in neutralizing the newcomer’s threat during the match, City rallied from a goal down to secure a 3-1 victory, with Josko Gvardiol, Erling Haaland, and Phil Foden all finding the net.
Reece James has since received high praise from ex-Arsenal forward Ian Wright, who considers the 24-year-old to be the leading candidate for England’s right-back position.
‘When you look at what he’s capable of doing, defending, passing,’ the former Three Lions star said after England beat Andorra in World Cup qualifying.
‘Even if he inverts and goes into the midfield, he’s comfortable there and we’ve seen that if he gets the time and space he can cross the ball and put it pinpoint. Defensively very sound.’
