Benfica currently sit second in the Liga Portugal standings, trailing Porto by five points but with one match in hand.
Lage was relieved of his duties after Benfica suffered a 3-2 defeat to Qarabag in their opening group-stage fixture of this season’s UEFA Champions League.
The vacancy was later filled by iconic manager Jose Mourinho, and Amorim had high praise for the former Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Manchester United tactician.
“He’s the best Portuguese manager, and that won’t change,” he told Portuguese newspaper A Bola.
“He’s always been a very special person in our football, but also in the world, and he opened all the doors for us.
“I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Jose Mourinho. “I think it’s going to be a lot of fun for you in Portugal, and we’re going to enjoy it.”
Despite earlier links to Benfica, Amorim made it clear that his attention remains firmly on his current role at Manchester United.
“But that’s the way it is, and we’ll be here,” he added.
“Watching to see what happens, but focused only on Manchester, and that will be my only club.”
Amorim’s Manchester United side secured a 2-1 victory over Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday, a match that saw Blues goalkeeper Robert Sanchez sent off in the opening minutes.
The win moved United up to 11th in the league table after five games. Still, Amorim faces mounting pressure to turn things around after a challenging start to his tenure at Old Trafford.
Mourinho took charge at Benfica after parting ways with Turkish outfit Fenerbahce last month.
His stint in Istanbul ended when Fenerbahce were knocked out of the Champions League play-offs—ironically, by Benfica.
Benfica responded to their European setback with a convincing 3-0 league win over AVS on Saturday.
