One bright spot came as Benjamin Sesko scored his first goal for United. Still, the achievement was eclipsed by another underwhelming team display and loss.
United spent much of the game defending, conceding twice in the opening 20 minutes.
Sesko offered hope with a goal midway through the first half, but Brentford sealed the result in stoppage time with a third strike.

The outcome leaves Amorim’s side in a familiar and fragile position, hovering just above the relegation zone.
With speculation mounting that club leadership is weighing up alternatives, the Portuguese coach faces mounting pressure. Here’s all the latest news from Old Trafford.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, head of INEOS, has reportedly contacted Gareth Southgate amid rising doubts over Amorim’s tenure.
The former England boss, who led the Three Lions to two European Championship finals, is said to be part of a three-man shortlist, according to the Mirror.
TalkSPORT reports that Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola are also being considered.
Southgate may be the frontrunner due to Ratcliffe’s long-standing admiration and his availability as a free agent.
He was first linked with the United role when Ratcliffe became co-owner in February 2024, and his name resurfaced after Erik ten Hag’s departure later that year.
The 55-year-old has been out of work since leaving his post with England after Euro 2024, though his prospects at Old Trafford may hinge on timing.
Reports suggest United are reluctant to part ways with Amorim before November 1, when the financial cost of terminating his contract would be significantly reduced.
Many frustrated United fans felt the team was unfairly treated on Saturday when Brentford avoided a red card—an opinion shared by former Premier League referee Mark Halsey.
Collins gave away a second-half penalty after fouling former Bees striker Mbeumo in the box as the last defender.
He received a yellow card, but some argued it should have been red for denying a clear scoring chance. VAR upheld Craig Pawson’s original decision after a review.
The Premier League Match Centre later released a statement explaining the ruling. It read: “The referee’s call of penalty was checked and confirmed by VAR – with Collins deemed to have pulled Mbeumo back.
“VAR also checked the referee’s call of yellow card to Collins – and deemed that Mbeumo wasn’t in control of the ball.”
However, Halsey, who officiated in the Premier League for more than ten years, strongly criticised both the decision and the explanation, insisting the correct outcome was obvious.
He said: “The statement from the Match Centre said that Mbeumo did not have control of the ball. It doesn’t say in law about having the ball under control. It’s about the likelihood of keeping control of the ball.
“In my opinion, the Match Centre statement was absolute nonsense and it was a clear, clear denial of a goalscoring opportunity.
“Manchester United will be very disappointed with that decision. A red card should have been shown to the Brentford player.”
