The team got off to a sluggish start at Stamford Bridge as they aimed to reverse their recent slump, having suffered consecutive losses to Crystal Palace and Galatasaray in the past week. ..Continue Reading
The Reds looked off the pace when Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo fired past stand-in Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who was making his full Premier League debut, in the 14th minute.
Still, the 2024/25 Premier League champions responded when Alexander Isak’s deft touch teed up Cody Gakpo, who converted clinically in the 63rd minute.
It seemed the match was heading for a stalemate until 18-year-old Brazilian Estevao drilled in Marc Cucurella’s lay-off in the 95th minute, sealing a dramatic 2-1 win for Chelsea.
Liverpool’s overall performance lacked the sharpness of their best days, with key figures like Mohamed Salah and Ibrahima Konate struggling in west London.
At the same time, attention turned to another underperforming player who has looked off-form in recent outings.
Alexis Mac Allister failed to impress at Stamford Bridge, prompting some fans to accuse him of ‘declining’ in the early stages of the 2025/26 campaign.
Caicedo, who scored, seemed to dominate the Argentine throughout the contest, and reactions online were blunt in their critique of the 2022 World Cup winner’s showing.
One said: “Mac Allister, I love you, man, but we need to ship him to Atletico and get a mobile ball winner in there. He’s killing us every game.”
Another added: “Mac Allister is nowhere near the levels he was at last season, it’s worrying.”
A third explained: “Mac Allister ego presses aggressively, Caicedo violates him, runs into the unmarked LCM zone & smacks one in.
Something similar happened against Newcastle last season when Bruno G violated him for that Isak thunder-strike.”
While a fourth commented: “Mac Allister has killed our break so many times. He needs a prolonged rest. I love him, but he’s nowhere near the level he usually is.”
As a fifth suggested: “Mac Allister’s passing – and I don’t just mean today – has been SO bad. Really basic passes are going horribly wrong on a regular basis this season.”
Mac Allister was taken off for Wataru Endo in the 87th minute and likely welcomed the substitution after a difficult outing.
Liverpool are set to resume Premier League duties against Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday October 19, following the international break.
