Despite ongoing issues in midfield and attack, the manager is focused on strengthening the goalkeeping department, a move that reflects deeper concerns about defensive stability at Old Trafford.
Since taking charge, Amorim has rotated between Altay Bayındır and newcomer Senne Lammens between the posts.
Bayındır, who started the season as United’s No.1, has struggled with consistency, making costly errors in key matches against Arsenal, Fulham, and Brentford.
Lammens, signed from Royal Antwerp on deadline day, was handed his debut in the recent 2–0 win over Sunderland and impressed with a clean sheet — United’s first in seven matches.
However, Amorim is reportedly unconvinced that either goalkeeper can provide the long-term reliability needed.
According to multiple reports, he is pushing for an experienced shot-stopper to arrive in January, someone who can immediately command the position and bring confidence to a shaky backline.
This decision is telling. While fans and pundits have pointed to midfield and attacking depth as areas needing reinforcement, Amorim’s insistence on a new goalkeeper suggests he views defensive frailty as the root of United’s struggles.
The club has conceded heavily in recent fixtures and has lacked leadership from the back — a problem Amorim is keen to solve before the second half of the season begins.
Names like Emiliano Martínez were considered in the summer, but United opted for Lammens instead.
Now, with Martínez back in the Aston Villa squad and Lammens still developing, Amorim may revisit that option or explore other experienced alternatives.
With United set to face Liverpool, Brighton, Nottingham Forest, and Tottenham after the international break, Lammens is expected to get a run of games.
These fixtures will likely determine whether Amorim doubles down on his goalkeeper search or gives the Belgian a longer leash.
Either way, the manager’s first January move — targeting a new No.1 — sends a clear message: defensive security is non-negotiable, and Amorim is ready to reshape the squad to reflect that.
