Bryan Mbeumo had opened the scoring in the second minute, before Cody Gakpo drew Liverpool level with 15 minutes left in regular time.
Mohamed Salah missed a chance to equalise earlier in the match, sending his shot wide, and was later substituted with one minute remaining — a surprising decision by Arne Slot.
The result sees third-placed Liverpool fall further behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, extending their domestic losing streak to three games.
United, currently ninth, are now just two points adrift of Slot’s side.
After the match, De Ligt offered insight into United’s tactical approach and identified specific areas they looked to exploit.
He told Viaplay: “We knew that Liverpool had weaknesses, and that’s their full-backs.
“We were all really hyped, and the focus was very high. Today was a game that you really have to be concentrated.”
Liverpool lined up with Conor Bradley and Milos Kerkez in the full-back positions, opting for Bradley over Jeremie Frimpong on the right and Kerkez ahead of Andy Robertson on the left.
Frimpong did feature late on, coming off the bench in the 89th minute to replace Salah in attack rather than slotting into the defensive line.
United’s next Premier League fixture is at home against Brighton next Saturday.
Liverpool return to Champions League action midweek with an away clash against Frankfurt on Tuesday.
They’ll then face Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday — the same venue where United suffered a 3-1 defeat last month.
