This campaign, Los Blancos are placed in Group A alongside AS Monaco, RB Leipzig, PSV Eindhoven, Wolves, Everton, Manchester City and Southampton.
They began with a 1-0 victory over Wolves under-21s last month, and on Wednesday evening, faced Southampton at St Mary’s – a match that ended with a dramatic late equalizer.
As seen in the footage below, Southampton secured a dramatic point when goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, who raced into the opposing penalty area during added time, won the initial header from a corner.
Los Blancos shot-stopper Sergio Mestre made an impressive save, but his deflection fell to Abdul Okunola, who nodded in from close range.
BBC commentator Tom Murray shared his thoughts after a thrilling night on the south coast. “Absolute daylight robbery that Southampton got a point against Real Madrid,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
“But what a header from Gavin Bazunu – Okunola well placed to get it over the line. Absolute last minute scenes and thoroughly enjoyed commentating on that moment.”
He added: “For the record Southampton can be very proud of how they played – defended as a unit extremely well. It was more a reference to the fact they barely got over halfway in the second half. Obviously very pleased they got that dramatic moment at the end.”
What is The Premier League International Cup?
The Premier League International Cup brings together the top 16 teams from the previous Premier League 2 season and 16 elite European clubs, divided into four groups of eight.
Each group features four English teams matched against four European teams. English sides face only the European teams once, and do not play each other. All matches are held in England.
The top two teams from each group advance to the quarter-finals, which are single-leg knockout matches with extra-time and penalties if needed.
