The Dutch defender believed he had equalised at the Etihad, but the goal was ruled out due to Andy Robertson’s position when the ball crossed the line. ..Continue Reading
The Scottish full-back was said to be obstructing Gianluigi Donnarumma’s view, although replays suggested the Italian shot-stopper could clearly see Van Dijk.
The Premier League explained on X: “#MCILIV – 38’ The referee’s call of offside and no goal to Liverpool was checked and confirmed by VAR – with Robertson in an offside position and deemed to be making an obvious action directly in front of the goalkeeper.”
Arne Slot was visibly frustrated by the call, voicing his anger to the fourth official, while Robertson and Van Dijk confronted referee Chris Kavanagh as they headed to the dressing room at the break.
Manchester United legend Gary Neville said on Sky Sports commentary: “I think he is outside the eyeline of the goalkeeper. I think Slot is right to be fuming. The goalkeeper is not getting anywhere near that. He had a clear line of sight.”
Former City defender Micah Richards commented on Sky Sports at half-time: “I think it’s really harsh.” His fellow pundit and ex-United midfielder Roy Keane responded: “Robertson has to come out quicker. He is in line with the ball. The rules are that Robertson has to get out quicker.”
City added to Liverpool’s misery shortly after, when Nico Gonzalez’s shot took a deflection off Van Dijk and beat Giorgi Mamardashvili to make it 2-0. Erling Haaland had earlier opened the scoring with a header that deflected off Ibrahima Konate.
The Norwegian striker missed a penalty earlier in the match, just 12 minutes in, after Mamardashvili fouled Jeremy Doku in the box.
The Premier League Match Centre also clarified that incident on social media, stating: “#MCILIV – 9’ VAR OVERTURN.
After review, the referee overturned the original decision of no penalty to Manchester City. Referee announcement: ‘After review, the goalkeeper commits a foul challenge on the attacker, the final decision is penalty.'”
