Reinforcements in central midfield are expected to be a top priority for United next summer, with several names already under consideration.
As reported by the Daily Mail, Gomes is now part of a shortlist that features Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.
Major changes are anticipated in United’s midfield setup, with Casemiro’s deal nearing its end and Bruno Fernandes’ future unclear beyond the World Cup.
With Kobbie Mainoo seeking a loan move and Manuel Ugarte struggling to find form, United are likely to be active in the transfer market.
Due to the impact of PSR on next summer’s dealings, a move for Gomes could be financially strategic.
Wolves remain winless in the Premier League, having collected just two points from their opening 11 matches — a scenario from which no team has previously avoided relegation.
Should Wolves drop to the Championship, they may be compelled to offload players.
United, however, won’t be alone in their pursuit of midfield talent, with Liverpool and Manchester City also expected to reinforce in that area.
Back in 2022, Liverpool were linked with Gomes while he was still in Brazil.
When asked about the rumors, he said: “Liverpool are a team I’d play for. I have the greatest desire to play.
“Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream in football.”
This long-standing ambition to compete in Europe’s top tournament adds further incentive for United to secure a top-four finish.
After ending last season in 15th place and falling short in the Europa League final, United are without European competition for the first time since 2014–15.
Amorim has indicated that the absence of midweek fixtures could be advantageous, allowing more time for training sessions.
Still, it has reduced chances for fringe players, with Mainoo requesting a loan in August.
Having yet to start a league match this season, the young midfielder is expected to push for a January loan, with Napoli showing interest.
The Daily Mail also noted that United plan to bring in a midfielder before the World Cup begins in June 2026, aiming to avoid inflated post-tournament fees.
A winter signing hasn’t been ruled out either, with Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher among the names being discussed.
