Following a disappointing 15th-place finish in the Premier League last term, United launched another rebuilding effort during the summer transfer window. ..Continue Reading
The club invested over £200 million in fresh talent, bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, Senne Lammens, and Diego Leon to bolster the squad.
Though still a work in progress, United have shown significant improvement this season, currently occupying seventh place and sitting just a point shy of the top four.
Cunha and Mbeumo have made an immediate impact in the revamped frontline — an expected outcome given their prior Premier League experience with Wolves and Brentford.
However, it’s been the composed performances of deadline-day arrival Lammens that have taken many by surprise, especially considering his youth and the relatively low transfer fee.
Lammens stepped in to replace Andre Onana and has impressed early on under Amorim, with club legend Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly a strong admirer of the young Belgian.
Amorim, too, has expressed his admiration for the 23-year-old, admitting that Lammens has ‘surprised’ him with how confidently he’s handled the demands of the position.
‘Of course, we do our diligence when we are going to buy players,’ he told Stadium Astro.
‘But as I said, it was a surprise, all the pressure that we suffer with the goalkeeper position to arrive here and to show that confidence.
‘To transmit that confidence to the team, I think, was a little bit of a surprise for me.
‘I’m not going to say everyone, but I’m talking as a manager, I have no problem to say that was a surprise for me.’
Draws against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham just before the international break extended United’s unbeaten streak in the league to five matches.
During that stretch, the team has netted 12 goals — a notable improvement from last season, when they managed only 44 goals across the entire campaign. Amorim has been quick to commend the team’s enhanced attacking output.
‘I think we are capable of scoring goals in any moment and this is so important especially in our league,’ he added.
‘Even to defend better, we have to have a team that scores in one transition, in two passes.
‘And if you compare to last season, we saw that we weren’t scoring goal enough to win football matches.
‘If you compare both seasons, we have improved on that.’
United are set to welcome Everton to Old Trafford on Monday night.
