A dramatic day of matches included Chelsea earning a disputed 2-0 victory over Burnley, while Liverpool endured a heavy 3-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest at Anfield, increasing uncertainty around Arne Slot’s position as head coach.
Supporters of Manchester United must wait until Monday night to watch their team, as they take on Everton in an 8pm kickoff at Old Trafford.
Yet it now seems the team might have to contest the fixture without Cunha, after an unexpected announcement revealed that the United player had been involved in an “accident” during preparations.
Following months of speculation connecting him to Old Trafford, Cunha completed his transfer to the club in June in a £62.5million move from fellow Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Since joining, the Brazilian has stood out for his new side, contributing significantly across his 11 outings to date, even though he has found the net only once.
However, United may be missing the attacker for the clash with Everton, after a message on social media from the local tourism page Visit Altrincham stated that he would not attend their Christmas Lights Switch On due to health issues stemming from a training mishap.
Sharing the update on Instagram, the page posted: “Unfortunately Matheus Cunha has had an accident in training today and will not be able to attend tonight’s Christmas Lights Switch on in Altrincham due to medical reasons.”
At present, details remain uncertain regarding what exactly happened to Cunha during training, how serious the incident was, or what it might mean for his availability in the near future.
The 26-year-old seemed perfectly well when he featured in the opening half of Brazil’s 1-1 friendly draw with Tunisia on Tuesday, but is said to have been hurt during United’s training sessions before hosting Everton.
Images released from the session suggested nothing out of the ordinary, though Benjamin Sesko, Harry Maguire, and Kobbie Mainoo were not seen participating.
