Following Chelsea’s controversial 2-0 win over Burnley in the early match, reigning champions Liverpool had an opportunity to ease the mounting pressure from their recent poor performances with a home fixture against Nottingham Forest.
Instead, the situation deteriorated further for the Merseyside club, suffering a 3-0 defeat to Sean Dyche’s side, intensifying speculation around the future of their title-winning coach.
As a result, Liverpool now seem to be approaching a pivotal moment in deciding whether to part ways with the Dutch tactician after the heavy loss.
The unexpected defeat to Forest has left Liverpool languishing in 11th place in the league, alarmingly closer to the drop zone than to their former title rivals Arsenal, who currently lead the standings.
Across all competitions, the team has now suffered eight defeats in their last 11 outings, including five losses in their previous six league matches — prompting a growing chorus of supporters demanding Slot’s dismissal.
Nevertheless, given that the ex-Feyenoord boss led Liverpool to Premier League glory just last season, Sky Sports analyst Jamie Redknapp believes Slot has earned enough goodwill to warrant patience from the club.
He said: “They [Liverpool] need to be patient, Arne Slot deserves that after last year.”
Redknapp, a former Liverpool midfielder with over a decade at the club, also highlighted the emotional toll of Diogo Jota’s tragic passing and the challenges of integrating new signings as possible factors behind the team’s slump.
Despite being under immense scrutiny — arguably more than any other manager globally — Slot took full accountability for the defeat in his post-match comments, shielding his players from blame.
“If things go well or things go bad it’s always my responsibility,” admitted the Liverpool boss.
“We weren’t able to create enough. I tried to adjust a few things that didn’t really work out. We weren’t able to score a goal.
“We are in a very bad spell. It’s that simple. We also know in a few days we play Champions League.”
Arne Slot: “Keep our head up. Work incredibly hard and try to turn things around. It’s been difficult to this until now.
“We have quality players. It’s my job to get the best out of them. I am not at the moment. That’s why I say it’s my responsibility.”
