themselves may be the only obstacle to their own Premier League triumph, as they are now the frontrunners to claim the title in May.
Mikel Arteta’s side widened their lead at the top with a dominant 4-1 win over North London foes Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Following Manchester City’s loss to Newcastle, Arsenal have tightened their grip on the title race heading into the demanding festive period.
Still, Carragher, the ex-Liverpool defender, insists that Arsenal’s biggest challenge could be internal.
Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “The only team that can stop Arsenal winning the league is Arsenal; they are the best team. They are the best squad.
“The only thing that can stop them is their own heads, their own mentality. Maybe this crowd getting nervous in March and April, if the league is still up for grabs by then.
“This would be the one. If they didn’t win it, I think we’d all point the finger at them and say, ‘You threw this away’. I don’t think that’s ever been the case before.
“I always think the case has been that there has been a team slightly better than them in the Premier League, but that is definitely not the case this season.”
Arsenal have been in similar positions in recent years, having launched title bids in each of the last three seasons without managing to go all the way. Arteta, however, is staying grounded, aware that the season is far from over.
When asked what sitting six points clear at this point of the campaign means, he responded: “In this league? Not much. We are doing really well. We’ve been really consistent and that’s it.
“I mean, when you look at the results, whether they win or lose, the difference in the scoreline and actually what happens in games is really small.”
Arsenal aim to keep their momentum going when they take on one of their nearest rivals next weekend. The Gunners will meet second-placed Chelsea in their upcoming league clash, where a win would stretch their lead to nine points.
