The reigning champions have now slipped to 11th in the standings, trailing league leaders Arsenal by 11 points amid a troubling stretch of results.
Slot accepted blame for the latest defeat, which has only increased the pressure on the Dutch coach after the club invested over £400 million on new signings during the summer.
Despite holding a contract through 2027, Slot would reportedly be due a substantial payout if Liverpool opted to part ways with him.
According to bookmakers, former boss Jurgen Klopp has emerged as the leading candidate to take over if the club’s hierarchy decides to make a change.
There’s currently no confirmation that Liverpool has drawn up a formal list of potential replacements for Slot, who is still believed to have the backing of the board.
However, prior to appointing him as Klopp’s successor in 2024, the club had explored several other managerial options.
Earlier this month, Lewis Steele of the Daily Mail hosted a Q&A session where he was asked to name possible candidates to succeed Slot.
Although he emphasized that Liverpool still supports Slot, he responded to the query as part of a “fun experiment”.
The journalist disclosed that alongside their interest in him and Ruben Amorim when Klopp announced his departure, Liverpool also admired five additional managers.
Sebastian Hoeness impressed the club after guiding Stuttgart to a second-place Bundesliga finish in 2023/24, while Girona’s Michel stood out for leading the Spanish side to their first-ever Champions League qualification.
The Reds also considered Roberto De Zerbi, who had been managing Brighton before moving to Marseille that summer, as well as Ernesto Valverde, the former Barcelona coach now in his second spell at Athletic Club.
Veteran tactician Luciano Spalletti was another name on their radar. The Italian recently returned to coaching by taking charge of Juventus after Igor Tudor’s dismissal last month.
Though those discussions occurred some time ago, and despite the current turmoil, Fabrizio Romano has shared the latest on the situation.
According to Romano, Liverpool “are not in talks” with any other manager, but the board does want to “see a different kind of results and different kind of performances” as “they expect much more” by Slot and his team.
Liverpool will look to respond on Wednesday when they face PSV at Anfield in the Champions League.
