At 40 years old, Amorim is aiming for a major improvement in his second campaign. United ended last season at a disastrous 15th place in the league and were beaten by Tottenham in the Europa League final. ..Continue Reading
The arrival of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and teenage talent Diego Leon could give United a much-needed boost, especially with Marcus Rashford heading to Barcelona on a season-long loan deal that includes a purchase option.
Meanwhile, the futures of Antony, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia, and Alejandro Garnacho remain up in the air—though Amorim’s recent comments to BBC Sport strongly suggest Garnacho may not be part of his long-term plans.
“Garnacho is a really talented boy. But sometimes things don’t work out,” Amorim explained.
“You cannot explain specifically what it is. It’s clear he wants a different thing with a different leadership.
“They want new challenges. The market is open. I’m just working with the players that I think are going to stay.”
He also revealed the six players he has tasked with being part of a dressing room leadership group ahead of the new season.
“I don’t treat the players as babies,” Amorim added. “But they have rules now, and that can change the way you train.
“I’m always on top. If you don’t train in the right way, I have footage to show you. And I show you in front of everybody.”
Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Tom Heaton, Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez and Mazraoui have been appointed to deal with “small things” in the dressing room.
In another interview with The Athletic, Amorim added: “So it’s not just the oldest one, Nous [Mazraoui] is in the group because he’s a character that I like.
“I try to understand the dynamic of the group, try to reach every space. They are the guys who are responsible for keeping everyone in line.”
And supporters were quick to react on social media, with some left surprised by the list.
One fan said: “Dalot of all people.”
Another added: “Leadership and Dalot in the same sentence?”
A third claimed: “What the hell is Dalot doing there?”
