He arrived at Old Trafford with a strong reputation from Portugal, where he achieved managerial success with Sporting CP, including a victory over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the Champions League.
However, Amorim has faced a challenging start as Manchester United manager, with the Red Devils suffering their latest setback against Fulham, who knocked them out of the FA Cup last weekend.
Ahead of Manchester United’s Europa League campaign resumption on Thursday, a report claims the 40-year-old has confided in friends, stating he believes he made a mistake in taking the job.
According to Football Insider, Amorim feels he should have waited until the summer and not given in to the ‘now-or-never’ ultimatum issued by Manchester United chiefs during negotiations.
Sources also suggest the Portuguese manager has been ‘personally shocked by how bad the players are,’ having previously thought they were much better.
Amorim has already lost 10 games since taking charge of Manchester United, including their FA Cup elimination by Fulham, where the holders were knocked out on penalties.
However, Manchester United can still salvage their season with success in the Europa League.
They face Real Sociedad in the last-16, but Amorim insists the club has ‘bigger’ concerns to address.
“People are looking at Europa League as the unique competition that we can win, also the connection with qualifying for the UCL,” he said.
“But to tell you the truth, I think we have bigger things to think.
“I know it’s strange to say that, but it’s something that we are trying to build here, that is going to be more important than winning a Cup in this moment.”
