United is preparing for a major squad overhaul this summer, with plans to offload players such as Marcus Rashford, Antony, Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof, and Tyrell Malacia.
Reports suggest that Amorim is keen to bring in a new first-choice goalkeeper, which could put Onana’s position at risk after another inconsistent season.
The club has already identified two potential replacements—Royal Antwerp’s highly-rated Senne Lammens and Lille’s goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.
While Onana has drawn interest from Saudi Arabian clubs offering him a way out of Manchester, ESPN reports that the goalkeeper is determined to remain at United.
He would only consider leaving if Amorim decides he is no longer needed.
Onana joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2023 for £43 million with a reputation as one of Europe’s finest ball-playing goalkeepers.
However, his performances have been marred by errors, particularly during United’s unsuccessful Champions League campaign last season.
Additional mistakes against Viktoria Plzen, Brighton, Nottingham Forest, and Ipswich this season have further put his position under scrutiny.
Earlier this month, Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly highlighted Onana as one of four players United paid excessively for, with the club still waiting for these signings to live up to their potential.
Despite these challenges, Onana appears resolute in proving his worth at Old Trafford.
‘If you look at the players we are buying this summer, that we didn’t buy, we’re buying Antony, we’re buying Casemiro, we’re buying Onana, we’re buying Hojlund, we’re buying Sancho,’ Ratcliffe said.
‘These are all things from the past, whether we like it or not, we’ve inherited those things and have to sort that out.’
A number of former United players have been brutal in their criticism of Onana, including Louis Saha, who insisted his displays were ‘not acceptable’ earlier in the campaign.
‘If you don’t have a confident goalkeeper he has to be challenged,’ he said. ‘Those performances are unacceptable, it’s not normal!
‘There is a need for every player at Manchester United – apart from Bruno Fernandes – to feel threatened with competition.
‘No one has shown that they deserve anything in the next game. The manager can challenge and criticise them because it’s not good enough.
‘Unless you can guarantee that you’re not going to make mistakes, you should not be considered as a guaranteed starter in any position. None of those players should be guaranteed anything.’
