Amorim steps in after Ten Hag was dismissed earlier this week, following United’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham.
The loss dropped United to 14th place in the Premier League, just seven points clear of the relegation zone.
In a press conference held on Friday before Liverpool’s match against Brighton, Slot was asked about Ten Hag’s sacking and Amorim’s appointment.
The Dutchman didn’t miss the opportunity to highlight United’s considerable spending in recent years, contrasting it with Liverpool’s more conservative approach.
“We only talk here a lot about the spending of, especially Chelsea but also Man United,” said Slot.
“I saw the stat when Erik left the club, how much in his two-and-a-half years he had spent.
“But on the same list, I saw that Brighton was only £10-15m underneath us. “The both of us were only just on the sheet!”
Since Erik ten Hag took charge of Manchester United in 2022, the club has invested over £600 million on new players.
During his five transfer windows, Ten Hag brought in 21 senior players, averaging over four new additions every six months.
His most costly signing was Brazilian forward Antony, who joined in 2022 for around £85 million but has only scored 12 goals for the club. Antony is now reportedly considering a move in the upcoming January transfer window.
Following the February acquisition of Manchester United’s football operations by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS, Ten Hag received significant financial backing, with roughly £200 million spent in the summer on players like Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt, and Leny Yoro.
However, these investments did not yield the desired results, and United’s poor performance early in the season led to Ten Hag’s dismissal after just nine Premier League games.
Meanwhile, Liverpool spent a modest £12.5 million in the summer to bring in Federico Chiesa from Juventus.
Under coach Arne Slot, Liverpool has thrived, currently sitting in second place, just one point behind leaders Manchester City.
