Liverpool have now suffered defeat in nine of their past 12 matches across all competitions, conceding three or more goals in each of their last three outings after the heavy loss to PSV — a match that prompted an x-rated post-match interview from Curtis Jones. ..Continue Reading
Ivan Perisic, formerly of Spurs, opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Virgil van Dijk conceded his third penalty of the campaign.
Dominik Szoboszlai equalised ten minutes later, but second-half strikes from Guus Til and a brace by Couhab Driouech condemned the reigning Premier League champions to their second significant home defeat in just seven days.
Slot is under increasing scrutiny, having guided the team to the Premier League crown in April during his debut season, only to follow it with a disastrous stretch despite a £450 million investment in new players.
Amid growing concerns about his capacity to reverse the team’s fortunes, club legend Jamie Carragher has stated that the coming week is pivotal for Slot’s tenure, suggesting that failing to secure at least seven points from upcoming fixtures against West Ham, Sunderland, and Leeds United should lead to his dismissal.
“Arne Slot has a week to save his job,” Carragher wrote in his column for The Telegraph after claiming the Dutchman “should be sacked” for continuing to pick error-prone Ibrahima Konate.
“It is hard to believe that sentence is being written, but Liverpool’s next three games are against West Ham United, Sunderland and Leeds United. Anything fewer than seven points will make an already unacceptable situation untenable.
“No matter how much goodwill the manager has, Liverpool Football Club cannot sustain the drop in standards witnessed over the past three months.”
He added: “With respect to the upcoming opponents, he could not have picked a better sequence of games to win back trust and save himself. But if it gets any worse and the manager cannot find the answers, the club will have no choice but to find someone else who can.”
Slot is under contract until 2027 and has reportedly been in talks over a possible extension. Due to the terms of his current deal, Liverpool would likely owe him around £10 million if they opted to part ways.
A report from Mail Sport, authored by journalist Lewis Steele, indicates that the Liverpool hierarchy continues to support Slot, with both club insiders and the 47-year-old maintaining that belief.
Speaking after the recent defeat about his situation, Slot said: “I am OK, I have got a lot of support from above. It would be nice to turn it around and get a victory, of course, but if you are working as a coach and not doing well then it is normal that questions are asked.
“I am OK with my position. It is not the first time I’ve been in a difficult position but it is about time that we turned it around.”
Currently sitting 12th in the Premier League standings, Liverpool are set to face West Ham on Sunday, with kick-off scheduled for 2:05pm.
