Ruben Amorim, Gyokeres’ manager in the Portuguese capital, is trying to persuade the 26-year-old to opt for Manchester United instead.
However, according to recent reports from L’Équipe, Arsenal has now shown willingness to meet Gyokeres’ €100m release clause, bringing them closer to securing the former Coventry City star, as no other club is currently prepared to pay such a sum.
Arsenal would still need to settle personal terms with Gyokeres, who is keen to join one of Europe’s elite teams.
The urgency for a new striker at Arsenal has intensified following Gabriel Jesus’ recent injury, with the forward tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
Even prior to this setback, Arsenal had been advised to bring in a top-tier striker to bolster their Premier League title ambitions.
Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak was initially Arsenal’s prime target, but with the Magpies demanding at least £150m to even start negotiations, he appears to be too costly.
Gyokeres presents a more affordable alternative, should Arsenal choose to trigger his €100m (£84m) release clause during the January transfer window.
Gyokeres has been in excellent form for Sporting Lisbon this season, tallying 32 goals and six assists in 30 matches across all competitions.
‘We will see,’ Gyokeres told Spanish publication Marca about his future last month.
‘There are many rumours circulating, but we are in the middle of the season and there are still many months left. We will see when the time comes what will happen.’
When asked where he sees himself playing at the age of 30, Gyokeres replied: ‘Playing for one of the best teams in Europe. That is the objective.’
