Following Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United, Amorim suggested that Arsenal’s wingers, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, aim to win corners by going outside their full-backs. ..Continue Reading
However, Arteta dismissed this notion, emphasizing that his team’s success from set pieces is a result of exploiting the weaknesses of their opponents.
Arteta explained that Arsenal’s use of inverted wingers often creates space for full-backs or midfielders to exploit.
“We play with inverted wingers, so they double up a lot of times inside, so there’s not a lot of space inside. When they leave, it leaves a lot of space for the six or the full-back, and if not, it’s for the nine, and then you can go outside. We need to look at every angle: what they do, where they are weak, and then we can exploit the weaknesses of the opposition.”
The Spaniard also highlighted that Arsenal’s proficiency from set pieces is just one aspect of their game.
“Last year we scored the most goals in the history of this football club, not because of only set pieces, but because of a lot of things that we have. We want to create individual and magic moments.
“A lot of players can create their own goals. We can create goals from short counters and long counters, slow build-ups, restarts and the opportunity to open up the opposition.”
Arteta acknowledged that set pieces are an important part of Arsenal’s strategy but insisted that his team is capable of scoring from various scenarios.
“We need that threat. I think we want to be very dangerous and very effective from every angle and every phase of play. Today we could have scored from open play like we did against West Ham and Sporting.
“The team really has that belief that from every angle we have the mentality to threaten the opponent and try to score.”
As Arsenal continues its push for a top-four finish in the Premier League, Arteta’s response to Amorim’s comments highlights the team’s adaptability and tactical awareness.
The Gunners’ ability to exploit weaknesses and maximize every phase of play will be crucial in their quest for success.
