Mikel Arteta sets points target for Arsenal to win the Premier League

Mikel Arteta has shared his perspective on the number of points he believes will be required to clinch the 2023/24 Premier League title.

Arteta’s Arsenal team finds themselves embroiled in a captivating three-way battle for the title alongside Manchester City and Liverpool this season.

Despite the fierce competition from Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp’s squads, the Gunners have managed to stay on par and currently hold third place in the standings.

However, witnessing both City and Liverpool secure late victories against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest respectively over the weekend has highlighted to Arsenal the importance of not relinquishing any unnecessary ground if they aspire to secure this season’s Premier League crown.

Arteta has acknowledged that Arsenal might need to win every remaining game of the season to bring the trophy back to north London for the first time in 20 years.

“You always ask me this question and I never get it right,” he joked when asked how many points would be needed to win the league before Monday’s clash with Sheffield United.

“The demands, you might have to win every game. I don’t know. I have no clue. There are a lot of games and we are all going to have crazy schedules and this league might be different to last season. Anything under 90 points I think would be very difficult.”

Currently, Arsenal occupies the third spot with 58 points, while Manchester City follows closely behind in second place with 62 points, and Liverpool leads the pack with 63 points.

With 12 games left in the Premier League season for the Gunners, their maximum achievable points tally stands at 94.

This implies that Arteta believes his team can only afford to slip up twice between now and the final day of the season on May 19th.

Arsenal’s upcoming fixtures include challenging away games against Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham, along with hosting Aston Villa, who are vying for a Champions League spot, at the Emirates Stadium.

The road ahead won’t be easy for Arteta’s squad. However, they might find encouragement in the upcoming match between City and Liverpool next week.

Moreover, Arsenal boasts the best goal difference among the teams, with a confident +39 tally. They have an opportunity to further enhance this statistic on Monday night when they face Sheffield United, a team that has conceded five goals in their last three games at Bramall Lane.
