Former Barcelona attacker Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring for Sevilla from the penalty spot in the first half.
Isaac Romero doubled the lead for the home side, before Marcus Rashford responded with his third goal of the campaign just before the break.
Barca had a golden chance to level the match in the 76th minute, but Robert Lewandowski failed to convert from the spot.
Things got worse when Jose Angel Carmona added a third for Sevilla in the 90th minute, and Akor Adams capped off the night with a stoppage-time strike.
Lewandowski attempted a ‘hop’ – reminiscent of ex-Arsenal midfielder Jorginho – during his penalty, but sent the ball wide of the left post, prompting loud jeers from the home crowd.
Barcelona fans have since voiced their anger at the striker, who has netted four times in nine appearances this season.
Taking to Twitter, one wrote: “Taking a pen after such a horrible performance is a crime.”
A second fumed: “Lewa penalty technique gotta be the worst I’ve ever seen.”
A third added: “A team with squad depth wouldn’t play Lewandowski.”
While a fourth said: “Please, I don’t know how we are going to get the money. We need a new striker.”
And a fifth wrote: “Lewandowski should be shipped to Saudi next season.”
Barcelona’s form has been inconsistent in the early stages of the 2025/26 campaign, with this marking their second defeat in just four days.
They were beaten 2-1 by PSG in the Champions League on Tuesday, with midfielder Dani Olmo receiving heavy criticism from Les Cules fans.
Barca will resume their La Liga schedule on October 18 after the international break, hosting Girona in what will be their first home match back at Camp Nou following major renovation work.
