Bruno Guimaraes mocks Arsenal’s failed transfer pursuit in Newcastle unveiling

Newcastle United new signing Bruno Guimaraes has mocked Arsenal’s failed transfer pursuit in an unveiling video posted on his social media after moving to St James’ Park.

Arsenal had been looking at the Brazilian to improve their midfield this month but were blown out of the water by Newcastle, who confirmed the signing on Sunday.

Guimaraes’ transfer represents a huge coup for the Toon as they look to add quality to their team and fight off relegation, with the newly flush club already competing with top-six sides for players.

Arsenal technical director Edu had tried to secure a deal for the player but felt Lyon would only sell for a huge sum of money, which Newcastle were willing to pay.

On Sunday, the 24-year-old midfielder signed a four-and-a-half-year deal and, in an unveiling video he posted on Twitter, couldn’t resist taking a pop at Arsenal’s failure to sign him in a move that will endear him to Newcastle fans.

Guimaraes uploaded a video in which a host of headlines regarding Arsenal’s interest flash across the screen, before they are replaced with a photoshopped image of the player in Newcastle’s kit outside St James’ Park.

One of the headlines read, ‘Arsenal face battle from two Premier League rivals to sign player Edu loves’ while another said, ‘Arsenal have three-man midfield shortlist led by Bruno Guimaraes as Mikel Arteta hints at splashing clash’.

But it was Newcastle who landed the Brazil international – on top of signing Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood – while they could even upset the Gunners even more by signing Eddie Nketiah on deadline day.

Speaking about signing Guimaraes, manager Eddie Howe said: ‘Bruno is a hugely exciting talent and has been one of our primary targets so I’m delighted to secure him. He strengthens the group immediately ready for the challenge ahead.

‘He has been one of the standout performers in France and is a full international for Brazil so I have no doubt our supporters will really enjoy watching him. We look forward to welcoming him to the club on his return from international duty.’
