Jamie Carragher mocks Ferdinand over Cristiano Ronaldo claim

Jamie Carragher and Rio Ferdinand were embroiled in a Twitter spat after the Liverpool legend accused the fomer United player of being a Cristiano Ronaldo ‘fan boy’.

The argument started after Carragher said Erik ten Hag was right not to play Ronaldo in United’s 6-3 defeat to Man City on Sunday.

The 37-year-old remained on the bench at the Etihad, with the Dutchman admitting afterwards that he didn’t bring Ronaldo on in the second half out of ‘respect’ for his career, due to the scoreline.

Carragher has been a critic of Ronaldo and said from the outset of his return to Old Trafford that United were wrong to bring him back.

However, Ferdinand disagreed with Ten Hag’s decision to drop Ronaldo and feels he should be starting games regularly.

Carragher described the criticism of Ten Hag’s decision not to play Ronaldo as ‘laughable.

The tweet drew a response from Ferdinand, who mocked Carragher by saying he was annoyed that Ronaldo blanked him – which is in reference to an incident this season when the Portugal skipper refused to shake his hand.

Carragher then claimed that Ferdinand was part of a clan of former United stars that defend Ronaldo, saying he’s a ‘fan boy’.

Ferdinand denied there is a WhatsApp group of former United players and he mocked Carragher for getting ‘bullied’ by former United skipper Roy Keane.

Reports on Monday emerged Ronaldo has been granted permission to leave the club in the January transfer window. The striker was absent from United’s pre-season tour and he has started just one Premier League game this season.

Ronaldo requested to leave the club in the summer window but Ten Hag was keen to keep him at Old Trafford.
