Carragher rates Chelsea’s Premier League title chances after recent struggles

Jamie Carragher has spoken out on whether he believes Chelsea remain in the race for the Premier League title despite their recent drop in form.

Chelsea currently found themselves top of the Premier League table after 14 games, a run which included just one defeat.

But, a mixture of injuries and a Covid-19 outbreak within the team has led to the club struggling in recent weeks and have picked up only five points from their last four matches.

First-team players Romelu Lukaku, Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz, N’Golo Kante and Timo Werner have missed at least one matcg during that run.

The dip in form has meant that the Blues have dropped down to third place in the table with 38 points from 18 matches and six points behind current league leaders Manchester City.

And former Liverpool player Carragher fears that Thomas Tuchel’s side have all but ended their Premier League title chances this campaign.

‘Most people think they [Man City] have the edge over Liverpool and Chelsea. It’s difficult to be too critical of Liverpool’s [2-2] draw against Tottenham, it’s not an easy game and they’ve got Covid-19, they played Thursday night,’ he told Sky Sports.

‘But what Liverpool can’t afford to do is what’s happened to Chelsea, where three points become six. I think that’s very very difficult for Chelsea to get that back.

‘Liverpool at the moment, it’s one game but they can’t allow that gap to five, six, seven points otherwise we’ll be fearing that the title will be going back to Manchester again.’

Despite several calls for a ‘circuit-breaker’ to stem the number of Covid-19 cases, the Premier League have today opted against such a break during Christmas period.

Chelsea travel to London rivals Brentford in the EFL Cup quarter final on Wednesday, before they play Aston Villa on Sunday in their annual Premier League Boxing Day game.
