Cavani sends message to Solskjaer over Ronaldo selection amid lack of playing time

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has sent a message to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, saying he and Cristiano Ronaldo can lead the club’s frontline together.

The former Napoli player has struggled for minutes since the Portuguese forward’s return to Old Trafford on deadline day, starting just two Premier League matches this campaign.

Cavani is currently out of football action with a tendon injury but is keen to forge a prolific partnership with fellow veteran Ronaldo in the next couple of games.

As quoted by ESPN, Cavani said: “It’s a pleasure not only for the fact that he’s [Ronaldo] a football star, but also for the fact that I see the way he has to handle the brilliance of that star that he has forged in his career.

“And to see the way he faces each training day by day is a sincere pleasure. He is one of the great players that I have played with and that arouses admiration in me.”

Ronaldo has done well since re-joining the Red devils from Juventus, scoring nine goals in 12 matches in all competitions, but they are struggling.

United have won just one of their last six Premier League games and are currently sixth in the table, nine points behind leaders Chelsea.

However, Ronaldo was powerless to stop United from losing 5-0 to Liverpool and 2-0 to Manchester City in their last two Premier League matches at Old Trafford.

But the former Juventus forward and Cavani have looked dangerous when played together by Solskjaer and the Uruguayan star is enjoying working with Ronaldo at Carrington.

Cavani added: “You enjoy it and try to learn, follow him in things that you may think are perfect, and I try to enjoy it in the sense that football sometimes allows you to hang out with stars but does not let you enjoy them for different reasons.

“Today I try to learn from their way of facing football and in the little that we have talked we have some similar things, perhaps not in terms of roots, but yes to what has been the formation of each one; we have similar things in that, not in football because he’s a beast.

“The important thing in the team is to complement each other, they have already seen us together and I think that beautiful and positive things have come out.

“I’ve always said that the pitch is the one that speaks and one must be there to give the best, train every day to be 100 per cent. “Hopefully we can continue to share moments on the pitch and give victories to the fans of our team, Manchester United.”

Cavani also spoke about his ongoing injury and concedes he’s unsure when he’ll play again after missing Uruguay’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

He continued: “Today I want to recover as soon as possible to be at the disposal of Manchester United and my national team.

“At the end of the day that’s what you want, you live 100% for football and what you least want is to be out. “So I want to recover to play these remaining months of the league and try to do it in the best way and to the top.”
