Why Chelsea are yet to finalise Victor Osimhen transfer move

Chelsea are still in talks with Victor Osimhen about the specifics of his potential salary package.

The complex nature of the transfer, which also includes Romelu Lukaku moving to Napoli, could extend until the final week of the transfer window.

There is also the possibility that the arrangement could be a loan with an option to buy. Currently, the clubs are nearing an agreement on a deal that would see high-profile strikers exchange places.

Napoli is unable to meet Osimhen’s substantial wages, which were partly negotiated as part of a new deal to ensure a higher transfer fee this summer.

Chelsea is among the few clubs this summer willing to invest in a top No 9 who also brings significant commercial value.

This is advantageous for Chelsea, given their desire to offload Lukaku and Napoli’s new manager, Antonio Conte, who views Lukaku as the ideal forward from their past working relationship.

While most details on the Lukaku side are settled, Osimhen and his representatives are insisting on the €12m net they believe they are owed from Napoli.

Chelsea is prepared to be flexible with their typically strict wage structure for a “star” like the 25-year-old, as it is also essential for enhancing the club’s commercial appeal.

This is partly why negotiations are prolonged, due to what are described as “complex” discussions about structuring his pay.

Chelsea’s approach to such contracts has evolved under Clearlake Capital’s majority ownership, with deals now involving more intricate elements than those of rivals.

An arrangement like Osimhen’s would include various conditions, along with clauses and bonuses related to image rights.

While there is a general expectation that a deal will be finalized, many details still need to be worked out.

The prevailing expectation is that Lukaku will transfer to Napoli permanently, while Osimhen will start as a loan.
