One issue stems from alleged financial rule breaches. The Times previously reported that Chelsea might face UEFA sanctions over spending violations, particularly regarding income generated from the sale of their women’s team and hotels to affiliated companies.
While an outright ban from European football is unlikely, penalties such as financial restrictions and strict spending regulations could be imposed.
Additionally, BBC Sport has revealed that Chelsea’s ownership structure is under scrutiny. BlueCo, the group that holds a majority stake in Chelsea, also owns French club Strasbourg, which is unexpectedly pushing for Champions League qualification under Liam Rosenior.
UEFA’s regulations prohibit two teams controlled by the same entity from competing in the same European tournament.
Discussions are ongoing to potentially place Strasbourg under a ‘blind trust’ while ensuring no conflicts arise from shared board members or staff.
If an agreement is not reached, UEFA would have the authority to exclude either Chelsea or Strasbourg from their respective competitions. In such cases, the club that finishes higher in its domestic league would retain the European spot.
This situation is similar to concerns surrounding Manchester United and Nice, both linked to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS. UEFA eventually allowed both teams to compete in the Europa League after Ratcliffe adjusted Nice’s ownership structure.
At this stage, there is no indication that Chelsea and Strasbourg will be given an alternative resolution.
However, if Strasbourg secures third place in Ligue 1, it could force Chelsea’s leadership, including Todd Boehly, to reassess their position.
To fully safeguard their Champions League place, Chelsea may need to finish above fourth in the Premier League to eliminate uncertainty surrounding their eligibility.
