Chelsea have officially confirmed the signing of Thiago Silva on a free transfer after his exit from Paris Saint-Germain.
The Brazilian defender has spent the last eight years with the PSG but played his last match for the French club in last Sunday’s Champions League final defeat against Bayern Munich.
Silva has signed a one-year contract with the option for a further 12 months and the clause can be triggered by either the player or Chelsea.
Frank Lampard began his summer spending spree with the additions of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech but is now concentrating on the defence which was poor last season.
Looking ahead to his new challenge, Silva said: ‘I am so happy to be joining Chelsea. I am delighted to be a part of Frank Lampard’s exciting squad for next season and I’m here to challenge for honours. See you soon Chelsea fans, I look forward to playing at Stamford Bridge very soon.’
Marina Granovskaia added: ‘We are delighted to be able to add a player of Thiago Silva’s proven world-class credentials to our squad.
‘Having performed at the highest level for many years, we have no doubt his experience and quality will complement the many exciting talents we already have here.

‘Thiago will be an excellent fit and we hope he can add some new trophies to his impressive list of honours.’
Chelsea also confirmed the signings of Ben Chilwell from Leicester and Malang Sarr from Nice and will now focus on agreeing a deal with Leverkusen for German midfielder Kai Havertz.
Havertz is desperate for a move to Chelsea but the two sides are yet to agree a fee. Lampard also wants to sign a new goalkeeper having already lost patience with Kepa Arrizabalaga.
