Chelsea handed double injury boost ahead of Southampton game

Chelsea manager Tuchel

Chelsea have received a double boost ahead of their Premier League clash with Southampton this weekend, with Kai Havertz and Thiago Silva both seen in training on Thursday.

Havertz has had a poor debut season after his move from Bayer Leverkusen last summer and his frustrations continued as he suffered a knock in training before Chelsea’s victory over Tottenham.

It means Havertz has played only two games under new manager Thomas Tuchel – versus Wolves and Burnley – but the 21-year-old could be set to feature on Saturday.

Also, Silva has missed Chelsea’s last three matches with a muscle injury and he will be desperate to return to the team against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton.

Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech were also pictured putting in the hard yards at the club’s training ground and are likely to feature at St Mary’s.

Both were unused substitutes as the London team cruised to 2-0 win over Newcastle at Stamford Bridge on Monday.

However, There was no sign of Tammy Abraham in Thursday’s training, though the striker is currently nursing an ankle injury.

Abraham went down just 20 minutes into Chelsea’s victory over Newcastle after a strong challenge from Jamaal Lascelles and had to be replaced in the match by Olivier Giroud, who scored the opening goal.

Asked for an update on Abraham’s fitness, Tuchel told reporters: ‘It’s serious enough he had to go out and we worry about him and hopefully he will not miss too many matches.’

Chelsea are enjoying a five-game winning streak ahead of this weekend’s clash and Tuchel remains unbeaten since taking over from Frank Lampard last month.
