Chelsea provide Mason Mount injury update after Plymouth win

Chelsea assistant manager Arno Michels could make no promises over the fitness of Mason Mount after he was substituted during Chelsea’s FA Cup win over Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

The Blues managed to avoid a shocking exit in the fourth-round tie as they came from a goal behind to beat Plymouth at Stamford Bridge.

The League One team took the lead in the first half through Macaulay Gillesphey, before Cesar Azpilicueta’s flick got the London club level.

Then in extra time, Marcos Alonso found the back of the net to give Chelsea the lead, but Kepa bailed his team out of trouble when he saved Ryan Hardie’s penalty.

Mount was taken off in the first half of extra time, after picking up a knock, and Michels, who took on media duties in the absence of Thomas Tuchel, is hoping the player’s injury isn’t serious.

‘He felt an injury in extra time with this shot,’ said Michels. ‘He realised quick he felt pain and so we took him off. ‘There will be further exams. Hopefully, it’s not too bad but I can’t promise what the situation is.’

On Hakim Ziyech and Azpilicueta, Michels added: ‘Hakim had a bit of a problem and Azpi with his hamstring I wouldn’t say they are injuries but we have a few muscular problems.

‘Hopefully they are only little ones so they are back in training tomorrow or Monday.’

The Blues are set to fly out to Abu Dhabi for the Club World Cup tonight, with the competition set to take place next week.
