While United are not actively seeking to sell any players, the harsh reality of their financial situation means they are open to reasonable offers, according to The Athletic.
Under PSR regulations, selling homegrown players translates to pure profit in accounting terms. This explains Chelsea’s proactive strategy of selling several academy graduates over recent years.
The potential sale of Mainoo would be particularly tough for United, given their tradition of nurturing local talent and the fact that Mainoo’s rise has been one of the few bright spots in a difficult year.
After breaking through under Erik ten Hag last season, the young player is seen as a key part of Ruben Amorim’s long-term strategy.
He is also expected to continue representing England under Thomas Tuchel, having played a crucial role under Gareth Southgate at Euro 2024.
Mainoo’s future is already uncertain as he is in the midst of contract negotiations. His current contract expires in two years, with an option for an additional year, but he is understandably seeking much better financial terms.
Chelsea, backed by their Clearlake ownership, has assembled a team of Europe’s most promising young talents, so it’s no surprise they are linked with Mainoo.
Reports earlier this week suggested they were leading the race to sign him, but it’s more accurate to say they are closely monitoring his situation.
The Blues have identified their summer targets, and although Mainoo may not be a priority, they are keeping an eye on developments, especially if his contract talks falter.
Chelsea has made significant investments in midfielders, breaking the British transfer record twice in quick succession to sign Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo. They also secured Romeo Lavia, who has shown promise under Enzo Maresca after an injury-hit first season.
Despite his talent, Mainoo has been inconsistent in the starting lineup since Amorim’s arrival. Although he looked impressive in last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool, United legend Paul Scholes has expressed concerns about the youngster.
‘Mainoo with his legs has to be a worry,’ Scholes told Premier League Productions when assessing who should feature in United’s midfield. ‘He doesn’t finish a lot of games.’
Another former United star, Michael Owen, added: ‘He looks heavy, but yeah, he tires a lot, doesn’t he? And it’s one thing he’s an unbelievable player, but if there’s one thing about Mainoo, it’s getting around the pitch and his ability to last a full game at the high intensity that’s needed.
‘And then you look at the other alternatives. You’ve got [Christian] Eriksen that’s getting on in years. Casemiro that’s never been that mobile but getting on in years.
‘So, I guess you’re left with [Manuel] Ugarte and another. You’re left with Ugarte.’
