Chelsea to sign Barcelona star Gavi & are ready to trigger €50m release clause

Chelsea on Gavi

Chelsea are interested in signing Barcelona midfielder Gavi and are ready to pay his €50m release clause, according to reports.

The 17-year-old midfielder has broken into the Barcelona first-team this campaign and has since been handed his debut for the Spain national team.

Having already drawn huge comparisons with club legend Andres Iniesta, Barcelona are desperate to tie him down to a new long-term deal with his current contract set to expire in 2023.

His current contract includes a release clause of €50m which the Blues are reportedly ready to trigger.

According to Sport, Chelsea could make their move ‘very soon’ with club owner Roman Abramovich ready to sanction the offer in a bid to lure him to Stamford Bridge.

But, the La Liga giants hope to end interest in Gavi by getting him to sign a new deal, with club president Joan Laporta reported to have made the new deal a priority.

That new contract, until 2026, would include a huge €1billion release clause, which the Spanish side have recently included in contracts for Pedri and Ansu Fati.

Such is the faith Barca and the manager Xavi have in the youngster, reports this week have claimed they could listen to offers for Frenkie de Jong in order to raise funds to be spent improving the team in other positions.

Gavi, now Spain’s youngest ever international, has played 14 matches at club level during the 2021-22 season, 10 of those in La Liga.
